Protecting Motherhood in the Most Vulnerable Places
On Mother’s Day, CMMB honors mothers and mother figures around the world. Yet while motherhood is universal, access to safe, supportive care is not. We believe that women who nurture our future deserve to live in communities that foster their well-being.
CMMB is keeping women safe in some of the world’s most vulnerable places by expanding access to medicines, healthcare, and clean water. Today, we share stories of five mothers in Peru, Kenya, Zambia, South Sudan, and Haiti, whose love and ste...
Making Motherhood Safer in Nigeria with St. Dominic’s
Pregnancy is a dangerous time in a woman’s life. This is especially true in Nigeria, where more women die from pregnancy-related causes than nearly anywhere else. In 2023, Nigeria accounted for more than a quarter of the world’s pregnancy-related deaths.
St. Dominic Catholic Hospital in Nigeria is dedicated to preventing maternal deaths through safe pregnancy care. CMMB has partnered with St. Dominic’s since 2018, equipping the hospital with vital medications and supplies. Our Access to Medic...
Responding to an Mpox Outbreak in South Sudan
South Sudan has faced incredible adversity in recent years: political violence, natural disaster, widespread food insecurity, and a deadly cholera outbreak. Still, resilience endures, and hope remains. Through every hardship, CMMB is committed to bringing love and compassion to South Sudan’s most vulnerable people. When an Mpox outbreak began in Western Equatoria State, the trusted relationships we’ve forged over the past 17 years made it possible for us to respond quickly. So did the generos...
Comprehensive Care for Children with Disabilities
A child’s job is to learn and grow. Yet children with disabilities often require extra support to reach developmental milestones and receive an education. In Peru, families often struggle to find help for their children with special needs, especially in the country’s rural and underserved urban areas. What’s worse, these families often face discrimination and exclusion. The isolation from others and the stress of caring for their child’s needs can strain caregivers’ mental health.

Water Brings Fresh Hope to a Village in South Sudan
Good health requires safe water. When clean, safe drinking water is easy to access, communities can avoid illness and disease, support the economic advancement of women and the education of children, and grow and safely prepare food. When water is hard to find or unreliable, families suffer.
In South Sudan, finding water is a daily challenge, especially for communities in rural areas. This African country faces multiple crises: protracted violence, seasonal flooding, famine, and a deadly chol...
World Health Worker Week: Investing in the VIPs of Health
Health workers fill many roles. They are doctors, nurses, community health workers, pharmacists, mental health counselors, and more. CMMB-supported health workers come from many backgrounds, yet they all share a calling: to care for our vulnerable neighbors in need.
April 1-7 is World Health Worker Week, a global advocacy initiative led by the Frontline Health Workers Coalition. CMMB joins people and organizations around the world in recognizing the crucial role of health workers and calling ...
Caring for Haitians Living with Hansen’s Disease
A young doctor named Paluel Joseph Flagg, grieving the loss of his wife and their infant daughter, hoped to find solace in service. He traveled to Haiti, where he discovered patients suffering from the devastating condition then known as leprosy. Inspired by the Haitians he met and the need he saw, Dr. Flagg went on to found CMMB. More than a century later, we remain dedicated to caring for those living with leprosy, or Hansen’s Disease. CMMB supports Klinik Sen Damien, Haiti’s only dedicated...
Expanding Cancer Care in Kenya
For nearly a decade, CMMB has worked with communities and government to bring cancer care to Kenya’s Kitui County, where breast and cervical cancer account for half of all cancer diagnoses. Today, women have broader access to screening, an essential for catching cancer in its early stages, when it is easiest to cure. More girls protect their futures with the HPV vaccine. And cancer patients, who once traveled far distances for treatment, receive quality medical care and emotional support clos...
Strengthening Cervical and Lung Cancer Care in Zambia
Cervical cancer is almost entirely preventable, yet in Zambia it accounts for 41% of new cancer cases among women. When detected early, cervical cancer is also highly curable. But more Zambians die from cervical cancer than any other type. Early detection and prompt treatment of lung cancer is also challenging, with treatment available only in Lusaka, Zambia’s capital. As with cervical cancer, late diagnoses often lead to poor patient outcomes.
CMMB is working to improve lung and cervical can...

Persevering Through Struggle
Shokrullah worried about his family’s safety in their native country. He had worked as an electrician in the US Embassy, and with the ruling party back in power, he was concerned that his service for the Americans put his family at risk.
With Resilience, Forging a New Future
Growing up in his home country, Jose’s mother would send him to buy bread, a little gift of independence that sparked his curiosity in the world of baking. When he was just 13, he started working at a bakery, learning the art of making baguettes and pan campesino.
He honed his craft for more than three decades, even as conditions in his country became more difficult for him and later, his family. But last summer, the life Jose had shaped changed dramatically.
Five Ways to Share the Gift of Health This Christmas
As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, many of us are busy shopping for our loved ones. But the most precious gifts come without fancy bows. Love, peace, togetherness: these are more valuable than anything we set under the Christmas tree. So is the gift of good health.
Ten Stories That Defined Our Work in 2025
As 2025 comes to a close, we reflect on a year filled with both progress and challenges. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, CMMB reached women, children, and their communities in the world’s most vulnerable places, saving lives through prenatal care, safe deliveries, and nutrition support.
